KK10 Starring Cong. Miro Quimbo

Around fifty (50) young residents of the barangay and various guests were on hand during the 10th General Assembly of the Katipunan ng Kabataan held at the Hacienda Heights Multi-Purpose Hall on July 10, 2010 to listen to Cong. Miro Quimbo, the newly-elected Representative of the second district of Marikina City, who was the guest of honor and speaker. And the good Congressman certainly did not disappoint.

Despite suffering from an extreme case of intestinal flu that day, Cong. Miro kept his commitment and delivered a folksy twenty minute talk, focusing on several pieces of advice to the youth based on his personal experience: (i) everyone has equal opportunities regardless of social or economic status, (ii) choose your finds wisely, (iii) never ever lose hope or one's ambitions, (iv) don't fall in love too soon, among others.

Barangay Fun Run

Approximately 120 residents of Barangay Concepcion Dos took part in the Barangay Fun Run entitled ‘Run The Good Race’ held in the very early morning of 26 June 2010 (with a 4:30 A.M. call up time). The SK fully supported this worthwhile endeavor with an appropriation of Php35,000.00 to cover the cost of th tarp and promotional materals, as well as the event’s T-shirts. This was a joint project with the barangay council of Barangay Concepcion Dos, Marikina City, and the St. Paul of the Cross Parish’s Evangelization & Lay Formation Ministry - featuring 3K, 5K & 10K races, a 500 meter run for kids, and a 3K walk for 'senior' citizens.

ALS Year 2 Update

For the last 2 years (2009 & 2010), the SK has sponsored the Alternative Learning System (ALS) Center project in our barangay for the benefit of out-of-school youth (and adults). In 2009, 13 (out of 16) learners successfully hurdled the ALS high-school equivalency tests; this year, 18 passed the registration requirements for the tests.

Work for the 2nd year of the program (2010) began as early as December 2009 with the conduct of literacy mapping in the barangay. Advocacy and social mobilization work then proceeded in the first quarter of 2010 (with dialogues with various urban poor communities spearheaded by Kgd. Ronnie Ortiz), resulting in 22 learners (8 females, 14 males) enrolled in the program. 19 of them persevered and applied for the equivalency tests (set for 15 August 2010), with 18 passing the registration process held just last 28 May 2010.

Thanks a million to Teacher Ivy Gamatero!

Summer Youth Sportsfest 2010

This was, by the far, the best-organized sportsfest ever!

A total of 14 teams participated in this 2-day sporting event, held exclusively at the Hacienda Heights courts. At the end of the fun-filled and very spirited competitions, the Toyota Auti & Jamblebogz teams emerged as basketball and volleyball champions, respectively.

Great job, MYA and SK Fam! Ang gagaling ninyo!!

The RISE-UP! Report

For the last 3 years, the SK in cooperation with the Kabataan Kontra Kahirapan KKK) conducted FREE college entrance tutorial programs (UPCAT review sessions) for incoming high school students in the barangay and Marikina.

The 2010 edition had 21 participants from the barangay (and around 30 or more walk-ins). Instead of being a weekly project, this time, the classes were held weekly (April 12-17, 2010) after the opening day on April 10th. The mock exams and campus tour were then set for April 19th.

Good luck to the participants!

Public Information Campaign for Election 2010

It will be recalled that the SK had conductive a comprehensive public information campaign sometime in September 2009 (in the form of multi-colored and attractively designed tarp streamers and leaflets, among others) to inform the public of the registration deadline for new voters for the 2010 elections.

A similar massive campaigns was just undertaken last April 2010 to promote a high voter turn-out for the national and local elections, when 50 specially-designed multi-colored 'Go Out & Vote' tarps were installed all over the barangay. Another campaign to enhance awareness among the youth on the need to register for the upcoming SK elections on October 2010 will be launched soon if the said election will push through.

Inauguration of SK Infra Projects

In the early morning of 16 April 2010, the long-awaited formal inauguration and blessing of the SK’s 3 infra projects was finally done. Fr. Balatbat, parish priest of the St. Paul of the Cross Parish Church, took the time to initially do the rounds of the SK office and the Barangay Hall Roofdeck (the latter was actually the barangay council’s project but the SK financially supported it upon the council’s request), before proceeding to the Hacienda Heights Badminton Court where the a sizable crowd of homeowners’ officers joined the barangay & SK folks in the ceremonies.

Sa wakas, natapos din!
